A global leading Actuator Manufacturer in producing actuators and flow control equipment for the oil and gas industry, providing crucial solutions for production, processing, distribution, and storage. Their products control vast networks of valves across oil refineries worldwide, designed to endure extreme environments and conditions. With their advanced equipment in constant demand, Rotork sought to innovate by creating IoT-enabled Smart Actuators for intelligent asset management.

Challenge

  • Inaccurate Renewable Forecasting: The dynamic and unpredictable nature of wind generation led to inefficiencies in power distribution and underutilization of renewable resources.
  • Grid Balancing: With increasing volumes of renewable energy, NGESO needed more advanced tools to balance supply and demand in real time.
  • Cross-Border Trading: NGESO also faced the challenge of integrating power supply with European energy markets, needing real-time data and better predictive capabilities to manage interconnector cables and ensure smooth cross-border electricity trading.

These pain points were critical, as inefficiencies in forecasting and real-time decision-making would affect the country’s renewable energy utilization and increase dependence on fossil fuels.

To further their digital capabilities, Actuator Manufacturer needed a cloud-based solution to support their iAM (Intelligent Asset Management) digital service. The aim was to enable real-time monitoring, data collection, and remote automation of their IoT-enabled actuators, which operate in challenging environments. The solution needed to be scalable, secure, and flexible enough to support future digital services, such as the integration of new edge devices beyond actuators. Additionally, the solution had to ensure secure communication, data integrity, and seamless accessibility for both customers and our Clients personnel.

The Solution

DigyCorp partnered with global Actuator Manufacturer to design and implement a comprehensive cloud-hosted solution that empowered our Client’s digital transformation:

  • IoT Connectivity: Created an access point for IoT edge devices to communicate securely with the cloud infrastructure, supporting data flow between devices and the cloud.
  • Secure Routing and Communication: Established secure, encrypted routing of all application messages, ensuring data integrity and reliability in communications between cloud services and connected edge assets.
  • Asset Database: Built an asset database to manage connectivity and security information for each device, enabling efficient monitoring and management of all connected assets.
  • Behavioural Logging: Implemented a secure, scalable database to log and store behavioural histories of edge devices, supporting insights into device performance and predictive maintenance.
  • User Portal: Developed an intuitive, external-facing portal that allowed customers and our Client staff to access the cloud-hosted services, manage devices remotely, and monitor real-time data through both a web portal and mobile app.
  • Security Services: Deployed advanced security services, including encryption, decryption, and hashing, to protect data at all stages of its journey from device to cloud.

This solution created a flexible, adaptable framework for Actuator Manufacturer's iAM service, supporting not only current actuators but also future edge devices, expanding Client's IoT ecosystem capabilities.
